Colorado to Texas

In SW Wyoming and headed to Dallas. Looking for the quickest route. One route takes me through Denver and south on I-25, then cutting over to Amarillo via rts 87 and 385. Is the 87/385 part of that route advisable in a 40-ft class A with a toad? Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have done the 287 route from Dallas to Denver twice in the last few years, good route, though boring.

You really have 2 options and both are good and both have their positive and negative points.

You can go to Denver and catch I-70 east to Salina then down 35 to DFW. Easiest, simplest probably smoothest way. Downside is it's a little bit longer. Have a few friends who summer in Colorado and Montana they all go this way now.

Again you can go to Denver and go down I-25 to Raton then 87 to Amarillo and 287 to DFW. Upside is it's shorter than I-70 but you'll have many, many small towns to go thru once you get into Texas. If you go this route go thru Dumas, TX rather than Boy's Ranch Rd to get into AMA. BRR snakes thru the canyons N of AMA and is great in a sports car.

The route that over the road truckers choose is south out of Wyoming to I76 in north Denver to I70 then east on I70 to Limon where they take US287 south all the rest of the way.

My older brother was an over the road trucker. He had a weekly route from Vernal, UT to Houston. I'm sure he tried every route possible but in the end he settled on from Denver to Limon then US287 all the rest of the way.

He said he knew every beer can in the borrow ditch.

I visit the DFW area occasionally. I live in Colorado Springs so I choose to go I25 to Raton then US87 to Dumas where I pickup US287 for the rest of the trip.

Taking the 287 route from Limon to Amarillo, one thing you don't have to worry about is getting slowed down in too many small towns, as there are not many of them, and in the last 4-5 years bypasses have been built around most of the ones that are there, if you can call a half mile curve a bypass. The largest city on this 330 mile route is Lamar, CO with an population of under 8,000, mot of the rest of the towns have a population of under 1,000, and don't even have a traffic light, typically they will have a dollar store, maybe a gas station, and that is about it.
