Colorado trip

Going from Mesa Verde to Montrose Co to Gunnison Co to Salidia Co. What is the best route with a 41 ft motorhome flat towing a Tahoe. Should I try it? How are the roads and passes. Thanks

From Mesa Verde take 145/62/550 to Montrose - a beautiful, easy drive with your motorhome. From Montrose take Hwy 50 over to Salida - no issues. We've driven those roads often with our 40' MH. Have a good trip!


Also, if staying in Montrose it would be worth your while to take your car down 550 south to Silverton. It's a unique little, fun mining town. This part of 550 is where you may have heard of a 'scary' road. It's just fine with your car. We've also driven it from Durango many times with our motorhome. (We enjoy mountain driving). We've spent many summers 4-wheeling in the southwestern area of Colorado.

He hit the nail right on the head. That is probably the best route. Though 160 to 550 will get you there via the "scary" road as he put it. It is not scary once you have been over it and are a somewhat reasonable driver imho and as long as your vehicle is up to it. I also agree with once in Montrose if you have the time definitely drive down through Ouray and on to Silverton even if just for the scenery as it is some of the best in the state.

But let me Add - Ouray - Telluride - Trout Lake - Dunton - Black Canyon of the Gunnison - Crested Butte - Just soooooooo much to see and do in this area - and IMHO the road is just plain EASY.................

If going to Silverton, you can leave your toad in Silverton and take a bus to Durango and take the Durango / Silverton Rail trip. Bus and rail tickets can be both be bought on-line. Train trip is three hours and I think the bus trip is 2 hours.
