Conditions on I81: Knoxville to Scranton

Heading from Austin to NH again next month. Looking for a different route. One option takes us from Knoxville to Scranton on I81. Hoping to avoid endless miles of construction. Any recent travelers on this leg? Road conditions? Any cautions? (Last year, our trip passed through Columbus, OH and it was rough avoiding tunnels.) Advice appreciated. Thanks!

We took 81 from 64 north in March. It was excellent. But, they now have construction in Wilkes-Barre, PA northbound. Big backups now.
North of Scranton the highway is in terrible shape to the NY border, then it gets better again

...well it takes big backups and construction to fix a road that is in terrible condition.

Thank you 2cyber71, good to know. Anyone with a recent journey on I-81 from Knoxville to I-64? Is there a forum/thread to stay current on construction on interstates?

You should be able to take I-81N to I-80E to the PA Turnpike I-476N back to I-81N avoiding Wilke-Barre and Scranton....

I have driven I81 between Knoxville and I64 countless times. Rarely do I experience problems. You may get a little traffic at Knoxville if during rush hours, but otherwise not too bad at all.
