Cortez to Santa Fe

My question is East on 64 when I get to Shiprock then south on 550 to I40 a good route. I have driven. I have driven on I40 from Albuquerque to Gallup then 491 north.
View towing a Ford Fiesta.

It is a much better road than 491, IMHO

We traveled the opposite direction in late 2019 taking 84 north out of Sante Fe, and 64 across at Chama, NM to 4 corners monument, with a stop at Aztec national monument along the way. Overall a nice somewhat scenic drive through the mountains around Dulce.

According to Google Maps the driving distance is only about 6 miles further than the 550 / I-25 route, and about 40 miles shorter than the I-40 route, best of all there are no major cities to deal with.

Yep, I'd just stay on 64 and pick up 84 by Tierra Amarilla just south of Chama.

The best and nicely scenic is 160 east to Pagosa Springs then 84 south. A couple nice Corp of Engineer parks on 84 in beautiful country. No mountains.

The route you asked about is boring.

Agree with Twogypsies. Have done that route twice both ways. Nice drive and I am a flat lander from Florida.

Cortez to,Santa Fe

550 is a perfectly good road. Minimal services and can be boring north of Cuba NM. It goes through several reservations so much of it is completely in a natural state but it is semi arid. The route through Pagosa Springs to Chama to Abiquiu to Santa Fe is beautiful. Good road and nothing steep. If you are passing through during the day Ghost Ranch north of Abiquiu is an interesting place. the 30 minute tour is like $5 and covers the history of the place. City Slickers was filmed there. Cool box canyon and rocks. Georgia O’Keeffe came to visit and moved there.

I recall there's a few grades on 84 about 10 miles south of Pagosa and one that's pretty long with a curve at the bottom. I've driven it a number of times both directions in my class A, nothing you would need to avoid. 100% agree the stretch from Pagosa to Chama is way nicer to look at than any part of 550.
