Leaving in September - suggest you try to time it to be driving through Colorado in late September - it will allow you to see and enjoy the Aspen turning Golden, Unbelievably Beautiful, well worth the timing that is required.
Late September is perfect for Colorado - October will be Great in Utah and Arizona as September is usually still pretty warm, so timing is critical, for enjoying the SouthWest.
From Connecticut I'd head to Hannibal and take RT 36 out to Colorado, if this sounds interesting let me know I'll post a great map and Images that will help, just trying to suggest a way to just make this Fun.
