Dallas, Texas to Cheyenne, Wyoming

Any thoughts on routing from Dallas to Wyoming? My research takes me on US Hwy 287 to IH-70 through Denver and then IH-25 North into Wyoming.

I dread the thought of the driving through the elevations in and around Denver and am looking at trying this routing: Staying mostly due north-

IH-35 / IH-135 to IH-80 West on into Cheyenne. Looks to be a hundred miles or so farther, but again, I am trying to stay away from the higher elevation areas.

Also going on to Yellowstone from the Cheyenne area but there seems to be several doable routes from there.

Any thoughts or advice? Thanks!

We went from College Station to Cheyenne once. We wanted to stop in Stillwater Ok to see relatives so from there went north on I-35 to Wichita, Ks then continued on north all the way to I-80 and across. I enjoyed the drive even though it was a little farther. I don't remember anything bad about that route although it was 5 years ago and things change.
I completely understand wanting to avoid Denver. We came back from Cheyenne down I-25 and traffic was very heavy from north of Denver to Colorado Springs.
Safe travels.

There are 3 ways to do this, we have and have friends who do this twice a year. Some are going to Montana, some Wyoming and some Northern Colorado.

Most go up I-35 to Salina and west on I-70. 975 miles, IMO this is the best overall and it really only takes a little longer.

A couple take 287 all the way to Limon and pickup I-70. 875 miles

One time we took 287 to Dumas then west to Raton and picked up I-25. 897 miles

I live in Colorado Springs. I drive from Colorado Springs to Dallas area fairly frequently and I drive from Colorado Springs to Cheyenne as well.

One responder mentioned the route through Raton, NM. That is the way I go. However the is the only reasonable route for me. You have better options. If you drive US287 to Dumas then take US87 to Raton to get on I25 you will have to maneuver Raton Pass, the cities of Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, Denver and right by Fort Collins. Every one of them can hang you up in one way or another.

Click on this MAP.

US287 is a four lane highway through Texas and 2 lane most of the rest of the way. It is a heavily used truck route but the road is generally well maintained. If you choose this route you will travel US287 from Fort Worth to Limon, CO where you will convert to CO71. CO71 is generally well maintained, is wide enough to drive comfortably in an RV and is mostly sparsely traveled. Pickup I80 just south of Kimball, NE and go west to Cheyenne.

Excellent way to avoid Denver.
