Denver to Moab advice

We will be traveling from Tennessee to Utah first of June this year. Looking for advise on what to see or do or where to stay between Denver and Moab. We could spend a week on that stretch of I70 area. thanks

I'm not an IRV2 Admin, but I play one on TV. Your question would be better posted in the section CAMPING, TRAVEL and TRIP PLANNING https://www.irv2.com/forums/f9/

I'd suggest that you might look to running out RT 6 to I-70 to RT 91 to Leadville on to Buena Vista then on to Montrose through Delta and on to Grand Junction Taking RT 128 off I-70 to Moab.

MAP of option one - https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=3335c...=2&form=S00027

There are many other options if this does not work.

Just one thought,

edit - We on the right track?

Lots of options for white water rafting if that's of interest..... Buena Vista is probably the epicenter for that.

Otherwise, fishing is plentiful in the area as well. If you want an in town resort in Moab, Canyonlands RV Park is nice. Otherwise BLM land or Sand Flats park have great options. Definitely rent a Jeep or side by side for a day and head out to both Thelma and Louise cliff as well as Slick Rock. What an experience no matter what speed you go!

All assume you're doing I-70 from Denver to Moab. Coronavirus restrictions may affect any of these.
  • Blackhawk/Central City - casino gambling if you're so inclined

  • Idaho Springs - hot springs

  • Georgetown/Silver Plume - Georgetown Loop railroad

  • Dillon/Silverthorne - gateway to Breckenridge, a nice place to visit for the day, or jump over Hoosier pass into South Park; fishing & boating on Lake Dillon; bicycling around the lake or over Vail Pass if you're phenomenally fit

  • Vail - great place to leave your money on overpriced everything!

  • Glenwood Springs - hot springs pool is a must-do if open; gateway to Aspen & Snowmass; hike to Hanging Lake if it's open again after the fires; Marble is a fun side trip

  • Rifle/Parachute - Rifle Gap state park; never been there, supposed to be nice

  • Grand Junction - Colorado National Monument; winery tours; nice state park on the Colorado River between GJ and Delta; Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP is a longish day trip

  • Moab - too much to mention - Canyonlands NP - Islands in the Sky district to the north of town, Needles district an hour south; Arches NP; incredible 4-wheeling all over - Schaffer Trail is cool if you're up for such things; Jeep and ATV rentals abound, ATVs are easier to handle than a Jeep if you're not an experienced off-roader; river tours

Regards,

Randy

To late to Edit - so here i go. Long list of items to look at/to on this first route;

Golden - Coors - Clear Creek - Town - Buffalo Bill - RT 6
Breck - Slopes - Tiger Run
RT 91 - Leadville - Quincy's - Camp Hale - Turquoise Lake - 4X4 trails
Twin Lakes - Independence Pass - Devils Punch Bowl -
Arkansas River - Rafting - Panning - Fishing
Buena Vista - Colligates - Cottonwood Pass - K's - River development in town
Salida - Town Park - Waterfront
Monarch Pass
Gunnison
Black Canyon
Wine from Grand Mesa
Grand Junction
Colorado Monument
RT 128 Colorado River
Moab - https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/f...d/29448394.cfm

Just off the top of my head - if you ait till Late September the Aspen jump to the top of the List.

Hope this helps,

I am doing sort of the same in May, leaving Branson MO for Utah then up to Denver to back home. So you are going to Denver then to Moab if thats correct finding a place in Denver could be tough. I go to Denver every year to see my kids and used to stay at St Vrain SP at Longmont. Its a great park but now trying to get reservations is tough, so I stopped going there. Then went to Dakota Ridge park in Golden, they made me mad last year over changing and or cancelling so do not go there either. Guess I am moving up the mountain this year with reservations at Central City KOA.

In Golden it may be worth going on the Coors Brewing tour. North of Denver you can go on the Budweiser tour. Both tours are well worth it. You may be able to get into the tour of the Mint in Denver but you need to get reservations in right away for that , as it books real fast.

I have never been to Moab so am looking forward to it. You might check this out for info. I know it helped me out. We are going to start in Cannon City Co, then to Page AZ on to Hurricane UT then to Moab spending about 4 nights in each spot. Good Luck with your trip

Couple notes - Try to get into Golden Clear Creek - Our fav- yes almost impossible to get into UNLESS you know when you will be there (Not our style) - IMHO is as good as possible in the Denver area, Right on Clear Creek and can walk into town - hard to beat - Our Grands are in Superior, so only 15 miles.

Moab is Fairly warm by May - keep that in Mind - FHU for A/C, might be needed. Info here - https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/f...d/29448394.cfm - Exit 214 off I-70 will allow you to drive along the Colorado River and get into Moab and RT 191.

Keep in mind the Heat in Utah as you plan - Been there Done That!

Dino is Beautiful and often Missed,

Best of Luck,

I always think about the Clear Creek park, but it just never seems like it would work out time wise. My kids live in Arvada and Milliken so try and get between them, which is St. Vrain SP but with the new reservation system it is making that hard.

Thanks for the temp. warning. I have made all my reservations and made sure I had my 50amp for the AC.

Thanks for the link

Glad I could help,

One more to Look at is the CG in Lyons - https://www.townoflyons.com/351/Camp...M-Johnson-Park

Last summer we were able to get back into Golden for the first time in almost 10 years - knew someone in the office and there was a cancelation - Golden is just so Nice with the Creek and the Town - our Coach spent three Winters there - So we have grown to Love the City.

There are fewer and fewer spot in the Foothills as time goes by - Boulder County fair Grounds used to also work on occasion - but has been closed with Covid - just DUMB - https://www.bouldercounty.org/open-s...ds/campground/ - might reopen by Summer.

I Hate reservations - but to stay around the Foothills I think we just have to get more familiar with the reservation system - Hard for us Easy for them.

Enjoy the Trip to Utah - might be smart to sneak out in the Middle to Cool Off in the San Juan's - just Beautiful.

Best of Luck,

Thanks for all the suggestions and experience in the area. I'll be spending the weekend doing research and hopefully some reservations. I looked at several campgrounds for this trip a few days ago. It does appear it's going to be more of a challenge to get a site reserved this year, alot of campgrounds already full or only a few sites remaining.

Just keep looking - read up on Boondocking and you can do it, there are places out there - we survived with no reservations for most of the summer and we were fine. In our 120 days one of the two reservations we had we cancelled - the other one we didn't really need........

Best of Luck,
