Door County to Akron?

We are leaving in 10 days to finally visit family. Our daughter lives in Chicago so we’re going there first (it’s all planned and reserved). Then we are all going to Wisconsin just above Milwaukee to her boyfriend’s Lake House.

After leaving Port Washington, WI my wife and I decided to head to nearby Door County for the weekend- again all reserved.

But next we are going to visit my sister in Akron, OH. This part of the trip isn’t planned yet.

So the choice is to backtrack down through Chicago and over to Akron OR go up through the UP and down through Michigan.

I know the UP and MI is great. I used to live in MI. But we don’t have massive amounts of time and it will only be Mid-May. Adding to this indecision is how horrible it is to drive through Chicago and across Indiana to Ohio.

So I need to pick a route and get planning. What say you kind folks?

Either way, you'll have to make at least 1-stop along the way. Going the UP route will add ~150 miles (Figure 3 hrs.) to your overall distance to Akron from Door County (approx. 750 vs. 600), but it will be a little more scenic drive going via the UP. And if you choose (to avoid close proximity to roads around Chicago) to jog over to I-39 from Milwaukee and then down to I-80 to head East along the underside of Chicago, the mileage creeps back up to 750 again. So, in my head, since you need to make an overnight stay either way, I'd go the UP route. JMO
