Google maps

I don't know the road conditions, Google Maps recommends taking Highway 2 or Interstate 15 down to Highway 87.

543 miles:

Hwy 2 to Wolf Point/Chelsea; then 13 south to 200 south to Glendive, then I-94 to Medora

586 miles:

Hwy 2 to Culbertson then 16 south to Glendive and I-94 east to Medora

Just did this trip in July. We were in West Glacier area and took Hwy 2 to I-15 to Great Falls. Great Falls south to Garryowen to see The Little Bighorn Battlefield. This leg we took 87 to 191 to 12 to 90/94.
When we left Garryowen, we took I-94 all the way to Medora exit 24, we stayed at Boots Campground. The Teddy Roosevelt NP is great place, we went to both South & North Units.

Depending on your time frame, ability for extra miles, and if you want to see more; Rt. 2 to MT 16 in Culbertson, then 16 down to either 201 in Fairview and across 200 to US 85, or MT 16 straight to Sidney and then to Glendive to 94.

Going through Fairview, you can see the Fairview Lift Bridge and Cartwright tunnel. Plus going up 58 (have to double back though) takes you to Fort Union Trading Post. And 200 to 85 takes you past the northern section of TRNP.

Actually looking for the best route with the least amount of gravel road construction, thinking of taking the interstates all the way even though it's a long way around through Bozeman, Billings and back up.
Thoughts??

You would add 200 miles just to avoid possible construction areas? You might want to check to see if the interstates will have any construction.

Hope you never plan a trip to Alaska!

Only construction we ran into was on 87 south of Great Falls. They were redoing the road; it was around 3 to 5 miles of construction.

Yep , just going to deal with the little bit outside of Great Falls, not going 200 miles out of my way. That was just a thought. Thanks all for the input, and by the way I am planning a trip to Alaska, so what, not going to be pulling a 37 ft 5r either.

Just drove the route

I just drove the route I mentioned above and the roads were in pretty good shape. Note that south of St. Mary there is 5 miles of heavy road construction on route 89. Recommend avoiding that area.
