I moved my account to NY " Port Authority " so I could get discounts on the Varrazarro Bridge, to Long Island. Got 2 white pass's.

The NY " Thruway Authority " stopped me at a booth and said I needed a Blue pass for MH. So I got one.

The NY " Metropolitan Transit Authority" toll collector said the Blue pass was the State ripping me off and I don't need one for the MH.

I just use the unmanned lanes and hope the ones with gates open.

Not ripping you off. If you get the NY EZpass registered for a motorhome (there's a form) they charge you the same for your motorhome as a passenger vehicle. I have two passes for mine. A white one for just the RV and a blue one for when it's pulling our cargo trailer.

Yes, I am aware of that, for the UpState, NY State Thruway system.

The down state bridges count axles. Trucks and MH are the same charge.

I pull a toad and the GWB is, I believe $80.00 with 4 axles, peak time.

Definitely makes sense to have your account where you can get a discount if you're going to be using those roads. Tolls around NYC are terrible! When we first got our NJ EZPass, there were discounts and a few years later they eliminated them - I guess they figured the customer benefit was not waiting in line to pay.

Once it gets into multiple transponders it gets confusing to me. And there is always the concern that if one of them isn't in the protective bag that it will also be read.

If NY has different policies, and tags, for upstate & around the city I wonder how they charge for out of state passes.

I thought all of these systems were required to inter-operate by October of 2016. Not so?

That was what was supposed to happen, and why I waited to switch states. Not especially surprised that it didn't though.

This is not correct, we have had one E-Z Pass on the MH for years and live in MA, they track the license number and 1 transponder on the MH does both the MH and toad as long as you have both vehicles registered on the website. We move the transponder to any one of 3 registered vehicles with no problems and correct tolls each time.

Thank you for sharing this.

Do you know how the system recognizes the different configurations to charge the correct tolls? Or do you just know that it works? - Thanks again.

The system reads the license plate and looks up that registered vehicle then charges the appropriate toll. And I know it works.

Thanks. It all seems complicated to me. And different toll readers are in different places - some are part of toll booths, and some are poles over the highway. There must be parts of the system that I'm not seeing - reading the license plate and counting axles. For example, with our configuration, if I'm pulling the toad, it reads the toad license plate with the MH transponder and I guess there is an algorithm for that. But in those states that transponders can move from vehicle to vehicle, it's the toad license plate with the same transponder whether it's a single vehicle or towed.

Then there are different states with different databases, and different regulations, like number of transponders per account, but they must be able to interact.

I can not speak to other systems, but E-Z Pass has a database with the registered license numbers and vehicle descriptions (number of axles). The db is by system, not state, so they use the same info at all E-Z Pass toll crossings. With E-Z Pass you will notice there are video cameras both in front of the toll area and behind it so the system has the ability to pick up the plates both places. It detects a transponder and compares the license plates to those registered and determines the appropriate toll.

DrDaveMA,

We are west coast based, but do travel on the east coast. When I researched it, I chose the MA EZ-Pass because they don't charge a monthly maintenance fee (important to me because of the gaps in time of use), and they don't charge for the transponder. The MADOT told me I have to order three transponders. One for the motorhome (no toad attached), one for the motorhome with attached toad, and one for the toad driven separately. I kept two transponders in the static electricity bags wrapped in aluminum foil as recommended by the DOT. The appropriate one was affixed to the vehicle being driven and/or toad.

I don't at all doubt your experience with the transponders. But given the apparent system differences in the various states I wonder if you've experienced the same situation when traveling through Ohio, NY, etc.

Thanks for explaining.
