Not recently - many moons ago but certainly "the most memorable" even after all these yrs is The Oh-My-God Road - Yes Really -
to Central City Co (Old Ghost Mining Town).
We did this in a camper van on our honeymoon not MH but we still talk about it.

Oh-My-God Road

Great Photos

I drove that in a 24ft Class A back in the 80's - I can why the current restrictions. Also did Hwy 212 in the same class A into Cooke City.

I have a couple. Some of which I mentioned here in the past.

-Hwy 75 from about Sun Valley, ID north through Stanley where it merges with Hwy 93 up through Salmon, ID then on to about Hamilton, MT. For me, one of the most beautiful drives in the Rocky Mountains.

-Hwy 200 from Missoula, MT to a little West of Great Falls, MT. Follows the Blackfoot River much of the way and has beautiful scenery.

-Also, Hwy 287 in S/W Montana through the entire Madison River Valley is my favorite place on earth.

-I was on the Going to the Sun Rd this summer and it was pretty fantastic. However, they do have regulation that are ignored about riding bicycles but they were largely ignored. IMO, bicycles should be outlawed on that road 24/7.

-Lastly, the Seward Hwy from Anchorage to Seward, AK was stunning. Not sure how we stayed on the road with the views we had while driving.

Well, thanks for all the wonderful tips and roads to cover as we explore this great country of ours which never runs out of wonderful places to see.

Yesterday we were entertained, awed, and astounded by the colors on the US 6 in Utah. We drove from the 191 to the 6 to the 50. The 6 was spectacular in the mountains and canyons. The colors of orange and red with some yellow around was enough to render you speechless.

Have to add this to one of the favorites. Utah and New Mexico surprise me the most. Each time I am in either of these, something new comes along I did not expect.

But, I would trade it all for the Sierra Nevada... oh well!

Rt 60 in Arizona Apache Jct to Show Low NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

Just made this drive somewhat by accident. We were going from Apache Junction to the Petrified Forest and this looked to be a shorter route that back tracking to Phoenix and up I17 to I40. My trusty Magellan RV GPS also directed us to this route! It was breath taking in more ways than one as we held our breath all the way through Salt River Canyon. It was beautiful scenery though when I could look at it. We did this in a 1998 33' gasser with a Chevy 454 towing a #4700+ Jeep with 4 people and full tanks! Was a once in a life time drive as we will not repeat this feat. By the grace an God we made it slowly but safely through it.

Tell us more this looks like something right up my alley.

Other than just slowing down and having the time to take in the view, were there other issues?

Sure looks like a great drive - Mountains - River - Great weather - Sounds like a WINNER.

Tell us more.....

Not sure what more to tell. If I can make in our rig your DP will have no problems. Light traffic and did not encounter 1 tractor/trailer. I did see another class A going the opposite way. I am deathly afraid of heights so I mostly gripped the wheel and watched the extremely curvy road in front of me. If you google "Salt River Canyon" you can get more information. There is a small but nice rest area at the canyon bottom and there are trails and whatnot you can go from there. We did not partake in that as we wanted out the other side before dark. Here are a few pics the DW shot on the non-hairy parts of the drive.

Thanks,

The Images make it even more attractive - I tend to go out of my way to find Roads like that. Love Them.

Thanks for sharing those Images - Son was in Phoenix last weekend would have loved it if I could have sent him there.

I'll keep it in the Bank of Roads I need to Travel.

Best of Luck and Thanks Again,

Here's a YouTube of Salt River Canyon. We've done it often with our 40' motorhome towing the Jeep. The descent is fairly short and it's over before you know it! Then you have an uphill to get you out. Otherwise the drive is very easy. Semi-trucks use it and many RVers as it leads to the cool country of Arizona in the summer. Just make sure you downshift before the descent. Don't try to do it mid-way. This highway is highly recommended.

By the way, you can find almost any scenic drive on YouTube. Just search by the road number or name.

Now we're going to have to see that too. It was on the list for our return trip from AK, but my wife thought she was having serious health problems so we skipped that and came straight home. After being checked thoroughly by docs at home the only problem was her anxiety, but I didn't know that and played it safe.

We've seen many of the other places mentioned in our 41 years of traveling and could not agree more with the assessments, sometimes more beautiful at different times of the year, but always beautiful. Living here in OR where it is predominantly green all year, I do miss the fall colors of the east coast where we lived our first 32 years (except for the Navy time).

Top of the World Highway from Chicken, AK to Dawson City, YT, but do it in late August. The tundra is in full color and each mountain side is a different color as you come around the shoulder of the individual hills. We took lots of pictures, but dumped them as they just didn't come close to what we actually saw. Twenty mile district at that time of the year is unbeatable.

A close second was the drive from Glennallen, AK to Delta Junction, AK on Alaska route A4 (The Richardson Highway) in the winter. We were up in Alaska for the Iditerod Dog Sled Race and took that route as part of our sightseeing. The mountains in Alaska are spectacular at any time, but this particular route is close to the best ever.
