Fayetteville to Mt. Airy, NC to Staunton, VA

Up coming trip from Fayetteville to Mt Airy, NC

40 foot DP

Route looks like 24 to 421 to 52 to Mt Airy, NC

After that Route 77 to Route 81 North

Has anyone taken this route before? What are the roads like? In terms of mountain grades? Curves? Road condition or?

Thanks in advance

dont know about 1st part but 77 to 81 isn't bad - lots of trucks on 81 but hey, - we need those trucks to be delivering their goods!

If in Mt Airy you probably mean Mayberry Campground. OUTSTANDING basic no frills, extremely well designed roads for easy maneuvering. But no frills so itís inexpensive. Actually one of our favorites.

421 is a great road. Not heavily travelled and it is in great shape.

77 from Mt Airy to Fancy Gap, Va is a pretty steep climb. Dont have the details in memory but you can check and decide for your self. We do that stretch frequently headed S but usually plan alternates headed N. If Mt Airy is a must no other good options unless you backtrack some and go to Greensboro.

Thanks, yep that's the one I was wondering about. I'm planning a trip to nc and that would be a good stopping point.

Update First Part of Route

Just got finished with the first part of the route from Fayetteville to Mt. Airy

Coming out of Fayetteville, some towns and stop lights. Traffic was always moving.

The rest of the trip was uneventful. Route 421 is a divided four lane highway with little to no traffic today. Road was in great shape

Route 52 was the worse of the ride. The tar strips can give one a definite headache.

Most of the trip was rolling hills. Never took the cruise off.

If, like me, you have weak kidneys, no rest stops so plan accordingly.

Our GPS had no issues with taking us exactly where we needed to go.

We're now at Mayberry Campground in Mt. Airy and have a fantastic site. Glad we picked this park.

Happy trails one and all.

Update Second Half of Trip

One long uphill pull just over the state line. My guess, about 6 miles of 4%, no stair stepping. Never an issue. The rest of the trip usually had the cruise control on except for a few steep sections where I got stuck behind a slow truck. Good ride both parts.
