Going to Clearwater we get off I10 at 19/98. It's a nice 4 lane with much less traffic, 60mph speed limit. Pretty easy driving. North of Crystal River we get on the Suncoast Parkway/589 toll road. We have the Sunpass and pay a lower toll but well worth the toll even without the pass as traffic is minimal. You could take that south to 54, then east to I75. After that it's dog eat dog. Be safe.

I-75 in Florida is one of the roads I try to drive during the night. Much saner. And the rest stops always have room if you're day-sleeping.

We live here

We have been living in the Sarasota area for over 25 years now. At first, it only got worse during the snowbird season. Now it's bad year-round. I hope you drove through here yesterday (Christmas Day). You should not have had any problem then.
On pretty much any other day, once you get to Tampa you are going to be stuck in traffic no matter what, all the way down past Naples. Noon to early afternoon traffic seems to ease up a little. Obviously, work rush hours are the worse.
Use Google maps or Waze with traffic enabled. They are dead on when it comes to traffic conditions.
Good Luck and safe travels.
