I-10 west to Las Cruces, New Mexico and then then I-25 north to Albuquerque. We run that route each year in the winter without a problem. There are occasional reports of bad spots along I-10 but I've never seen areas which were so bad I started thinking about another route.

Huh??? The closest you get to the border is El Paso and unless you want to go hang around back alleys you should go through there at 60MPH. El Paso is a modern city of 800,000.

As I said, there are sections along I-10 that are always worse than others and are under construction/updating. However, when I traveled it last in January there wasn't anything that would have driven me to seek another route. We came back east from Tucson on I-10 and picked up I-20 at it's beginning, and found the same situation. Some sections under construction but again, nothing that would drive me from that route either. By the way, when we're heading to the southwest each year we spend long days on the road. Six hundred plus miles a day are the standard and we usually overnight in places like rest areas Walmarts or wide spots in the road. We do the same when we run to Alaska every other summer. If we're not in "SIGHTSEEING" mode we "ROLL". (Just so you have some background on how we travel.)

You're listening to too many journalists.

For 2016 there are three Texas border towns that made the top 100 of safest cities in the U.S. Is your city listed?

#31 McAllen, TX
#37 El Paso, TX
#60 Laredo, TX

Desperados don't hang out at border towns....they move on fast - perhaps heading to your city.

There's no need to worry about traveling close to the border. Millions do it and also live in these towns.
