Florida to Mass....Scenic vs Safety...Help!

Hey Folks, Welp...we're heading back to Spokane WA starting April 1st but we're wanting to head up to Connecticut & Massachusetts to visit friends & family.

We sorta have the route figured out up to Florence, SC, and we are struggling with which way to go....

The Appalachian Mtns vs staying closer to the water and heading up to Norfolk and then Delaware.

But THEN...how in the WORLD do we get around New York and over to Prospect, CT safely?

Are any of those parkways safe for RV'ers? Is the NY Thruway safe?

Our trip from the west down south and to Florida was SOO EASY! Very little traffic overall. This trip North is starting to scare the willies out of me!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I do the FL Keys to NJ trip at least six times a year.

Compared to what you went through out west, the Appalachians are hills, not mountains!

Take I-95 up to Fredericksburg, VA.
Turn onto Rt. 17 and take that to Paris, VA.
Make a right onto Rt. 50 to I-81.
Take I-81 to I-84 to Prospect, CT.

DO NOT take any parkway in NY State! Bridges are too low.
Route above takes you away from the mess of DC/Baltimore/Philly/NYC.
You don't have to get on the NYS Thruway.

Any road is 'safe' for the RV. Whether it's safe for the driver is a different story!

TriMoot-

To go north from Delaware:

Delaware Memorial Bridge to 295 north (exit at foot of bridge in NJ)
295 north to 31 north in Ewing, NJ
31 north to 202 east in Ringoes, NJ
202 east to 287 north in Somerville, NJ
287 north to 87 north in Suffern, NJ
87 north to 84 east in Newburgh, NY
84 east to Prospect, CT

If you choose not to go the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Norfolk, VA, but instead want to stay on the "western shore" of VA and MD, I can share info on a couple of routes around Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

Safe from what? It's part of I-90, not a parkway so it's absolutely fine for height.

Last week on our way home from Texas to New Hampshire I drove our 32 ft RV the entire length of the NY Thruway. We got on I-90 in PA, went through NY and onto the Mass Pike as it's called in MA. We stayed overnight at the Cracker Barrel in East Greenbush, NY.

It didn't feel any different to any other any road except that I cringed a bit every time we went under the toll collecting cameras. I'm don't know what the bill is going be.

I thought of this on the way through.

Garden state parkway in nj overpasses are 13.7 ft in the center and 13 ft on right and left sides. What is your overall height?

90 is not a parkway. Stay off the Merit Parkway 5/15 in CT.

26/77 Charlotte

I have done the trip you mention dozens of times. You don't need or want to go anywhere near the Garden State Parkway or NY state Thruway. Stay far away from DC, NJ, Philly, NYC because they are brutally crowded and have expensive tolls. I have been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for hours in those areas. Get on I-81 early, take it to I-84 which will take you through Connecticut to MA.

If you look at a map, you can access I-81 in a number of ways. (1) Exit I-95 at I-26 and take I-26 and I-77 to I-81. (2) I-95 to Richmond then I64 to I-81. (3) I-95 to Fredericksburg VA, then US 17 To I-66 to I-81. In general, the earlier you leave I-95 the calmer the ride is but the more miles you will travel.

Do not take I-95 beyond US-17 in VA, because that will put you into the awful traffic of DC and depending on your route beyond DC possibly Baltimore, Philadelphia, NJ and NY. All of that area is to be avoided at all costs unless you have a destination there.

Along I-81 there is a great place to overnight for free in Wilkes-Barre PA and that is the Mohegan Sun Casino. Big, level lot and okay to overnight on the lot on the west side of the Casino.

Here's what we do: I/95 to I/26 (SC) to I/77 (Columbia SC) to I/81 (Wytheville, VA) to I/84 (Scranton PA) into Mass. The only toll is the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in NY about $10 for our 5 axle rig.

There are a lot of traffic related reasons to break off 95 before DC. But there are some nice things you would miss:
-VA beach, nice national campground there.
-Take the bay bridge tunnel, use Rt 13 and hit Assateague national campground,
then Cape Henlopen park.
-Here you could use the Cape May Lewes ferry or go inland, then back east and hit the Jersey Shore sights.

Honestly from there I would recommend going way inland, avoid anything around NY city and I95 above the city. The roads are absolute crap.

These suggestions will cost more and take more time than the direct route. But the experience is what it is about, right?

Another vote for the Western route once you get to Richmond, VA. 64W - 81N - 84E

And you're not allowed. No RVs, nothing in tow. Passenger cars and light trucks only.

https://wwwapps.thruway.ny.gov/tollcalculator/

Click "All other vehicles", 7'6" or taller, then Mass border to PA border.

Assuming you're doing "pay by mail" vs. having an EZ-pass:

Just a 2 axle RV looks to be about $45.

2 axle vehicle pulling a 2 axle something (truck plus trailer or motorhome plus car) is around $85

Tag axle coach plus toad (or truck plus 3-axle fifth wheel) is around $115.

RVThere, thank you so much. Were planning on taking your route.

Couple of questions:

1. Do I need to be concerned about Richmond? Just take 295?

2. Anything worthwhile to see between Florence SC and Prospect CT?

Ive been concerned for the last few days and finally thought I had better look at this route, looks pretty straight forward.

Thanks again!
