Shafer Trail is more suited to a 4x4 although I guess one could do it with a regular car if the road conditions are right. It's a fun drive!

Stay at one of the state parks near New Orleans. We stayed at St Bernard had no problem getting a spot about the same time you are going through. It’s an easy drive into the city.

My Grand Cherokee did it easily. His 2012 Buick Enclave is not as capable but it is an SUV and if one takes it easy, I think it could be done.

Also don't forget the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola on the way to NOLA. Plenty of RV parking at the museum. There are several state parks to stay at within a short drive.

There are many Jeep Rentals in Moab or a Jeep Tour (someone else driving). It's an awesome experience if you don't want to take the Enclave on some easy trails.

The Harvey Canal Tunnel is underwater.....at least thats what the DJs used to say every morning in NOLA.
We are heading the same way in May, Middle GA to OKC, Denver, MOAB, Vegas, Tucson, then back home along as much of Rt 66 as possible. As many National Parks along the way as possible.

Might look at Putting Texarkana - Paris and Amarillo in as way points - Oklahoma has a reputation for it roads - not very good.
Just a thought,

My kidneys feel the pain. My Dad was born on an 80 acre farm outside Wewoka OK, Ive been all over those roads my entire life running back and forth to the family farm. As kids, its the only vacation we ever got.
P.S. Last time I was in NOLA was Katrina rescue ops. and I lived on Grand Isle in the 80s. The Westbank was always cleaner and safer than the Eastbank.
