From Idaho, Montana Border to West Yellowstone

Hi,

We are planning a trip out west and one thing we want to do is to ride our motorcycle south from Montana on 93 to Challis. We plan on leaving our motorhome at a campground somewhere near the border of Idaho and Montana. This is my question, we had initially thought that we should head back to Missoula and pick up 90 and head east to get to West Yellowstone, but I see right at the border there is a Highway 43 that we could take to 15 and then up to 90. Thinking this would be quicker and less miles but wondering if 43 is okay to drive a motorhome pulling a trailer on? I am not a fan of motorhomes and mountains together. Not real scary ones anyways. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

I often travel 93 over Lost Trail Pass in a car and have often thought about a side venture on 43, but so far I haven’t taken the turn.

The highway to Lost Trail from the North is a bunch of Up. Nothing scary, good road, plenty of room, rest area at the top. As long as your rig is good for climbing you’l be fine. From the top down toward Challis is down, down, down on a less well maintained road, plenty of curves and. plenty of low gear go slow areas. You’ll have a great ride on your bikes.

The ride from Challis to Stanley is beautiful so I suggest you extend that run just a bit farther… and the ride to Ketchum is mighty fine too…

How’s that for not answering your original question! There is just so much greatness to see in that area.

Why not park the motorhome in Salmon ( a couple RV parks there & lots of dry camping along 93 toward Challis) and then do the cycle ride to Stanley and the Sawtooth Nat'l Rec Area (gorgeous) then down 75 to Sun Valley, then over to Arco (Craters of the Moon Nat'l Mon.) and taking 93 north to Challis and returning to Salmon again. You could even break it down to a couple nice rides. Don't stop at Challis! Keep on goin'. Idaho is a beautiful state!!

Here is a description of Hwy 43... read from bottom to top for east driving:

Here's a video of the trip. Looks like a non-issue. I'd go for it!
