Ft. Worth to Custer,SD

towing from ft. worth to custer,sd in september and looking for least stressful route..am researching 287 to 385 or to 83. probably going to break it up with two overnight stops as equally spaced as feasible. pulling 28' travel trailer. any tips would be appreciated.

You are looking at 1000 to about 1100 miles for the trip. Two overnight stops will will give you 3 travel days of about 350 miles per day which is very doable. Personally, I like a bit shorter days and like to spend two nights instead of just one night, but I am retired.

We use RV Trip Wizard to plan a trip and estimate our stops. It can show most of the campgrounds in an area.

There is a nice state park in southwestern KS...Lake Scott State Park. There is some history in the area and worth an extra day there.

More raves for Lake Scott

I'll second the recommendation for Lake Scott. Pleasant out of the way park on little lake in surprising geography. If someone dropped you there, you would swear you were in the southwest...Arizona or New Mexico...even satisfied the Pueblos in the 1680's. Northest and Eastest pueblo ever constructed.
As to routes, if you like less traveled either Kansas state 25 or 61 are decent roads, or were a few years ago, and get less traffic than the US hiways.
Happy Travels

We stopped in Sidney, Ne. for a couple of nights. There is the old national headquarters of Cabela's and they have a campground.
They do not take reservation it is first come first there to get a spot. the campground is really nice, they have a nice shower house with a very clean laundry room. Each site was nice and level with full 50 amp hookups. From there it is straight up to the Custer/ Rapid City area on 385. If I remember it was around a 5 hour drive from Sidney to Rapid City.
