Garmin RV 780 GPS
Does anyone else have a Garmin RV 780 GPS? Do you like it? Ours likes to take us through the middle of towns/cities. Even when there is a perfectly good bypass to use it evidently thinks we want to see main street and takes us that way. I had a heck of a time getting it to keep us out of San Antonio, TX. I'd drag and drop the route to go around, and the next chance it got it routed us right back to San Antonio. I'm sure there are some wonderful things to see in San Antonio, but we wanted to skirt the city and not drive through it. Does anyone else have this problem? We got along great with our Garmin 660, but it died and the 780 as it's replacement isn't working as well, for us.

Do you have the preferences set for Fastest Route or Shortest Route? The shortest route will take you all kinds of places you don't want to go.

It is set to fastest route. Maybe I need to set it to shortest route, I have not tried that.

Shortest route will take you down back roads and country lanes you don't want to go. Fastest route normally will stick to major roads and freeways.

Set a waypoint along the area where you want to force the route to go.

Yes I did that. Then the next corner it wanted us to go to San Antonio. I put in another way point, it still wanted to go to San Antonio. I got it to work eventually, but San Antonio was a big pull for this GPS unit.

We had similar issues when we started using ours, what I discovered is if we shaped a route every time we deviated from it and it recalculated the shape disappeared.
What I found is we would add a stop (waypoint) if we added something like a gas stop or a rest stop .... it would keep the stop.
I sit down with Google Maps on my computer and map out our trips. I plug in my 780 and check for updates and put the route in from just A to B and tell it to calculate. Then I add stops as needed, this works perfectly.
We live NW a little of FTW and travel to central Louisiana several times a year, each time the 780 wanted to take me through the middle of downtown Dallas. Yikes I add a stop to I-35W near the bottom of FTW and we take I-35 to I-20 and out the bottom of DFW. It's the lesser of the evils in crossing DFW.

Build your own route BaseCamp and upload it to any Garmin.
