Google Maps is terrible

We did a trip to New Hampshire on Aug 3rd. Took I 88 to Albany, NY.
On our way back, Google maps wanted to detour us about 3 hours out of our way saying that I88 was closed west bound.
Well it was closed but it was open with single lane both ways on. The other side as we knew from heading east on the 3rd.

I’m glad we knew.

It seems like Google maps gives better directions from my personal cell phone on AT&T network than from my Work cell Sprint phone.

Interesting. I primarily use google maps but never follow it blindly.

No piece of technology or paper is 100% fool proof.

We've traveled the country coast to coast for years using Google Nav/Maps. Perfect? No. But overall, works very well for us.

We wouldn't rely on any map program. Always check with the state transportation site to confirm what's going on out there.

We like paper, also!

We use Waze for current road conditions. Backed up with current Truckers Commercial interstate map book and GPS APP/Garmin Truck mode.

Have 45 foot coach towing a Tahoe so current road conditions, bridge height, HW classification is critical for safe travel especially if detoured for whatever reasons. Traveled most of country. FYI stopped using Google Maps years ago.

I've used Waze for years now. It has it's quirks, but usually is pretty reliable and you can ping other drivers to find out what's going on ahead of you. Also good for knowing things like Police ahead, objects in the road, flash flooding etc. Google maps (for me) is more for planning trips and looking at satellite details.

Google Maps also doesn't know your height or weight or whether you're towing, so it will route you on car-appropriate but not always RV-appropriate (or allowed) roads. Be glad it didn't send you the Taconic Parkway or you'd have a convertible (and a huge ticket for not being permitted on that route)....

Google Maps is for small vehicles not large RVs and trucks. It's timing is always understated. It does not help with low accesses. Has sent us miles out of the way. Wants us to turn around in impossible situations.
On the other hand it saved us from a 4 hour tie up thru Austin.
It a GPS, use it as guidance not as the altimate know it all. I always use Paper Maps for trip planning.

We didn't travel in the far NE but a couple times. Otherwise, we never worried about low clearances, height/weight. We used secondary highways mostly and never had an issue. We studied the route on our own. How did folks travel years ago before GPS?

One of the things I like about Android Auto is Google maps displayed on my truck screen.

I tried Waze a few years ago but never got comfortable with it. I hate change. Does Waze have the ability to display via Android Auto? For the fruit lovers, how about Apple carplay?

Yes, it works like a charm on Apple CarPlay. Looks great on my RAM 12" screen. What I like about Waze is it's "social media" factor in that you get instant reports on accidents, slow downs, road hazards and police activity from other users.

There's a bunch of other social media stuff in there that I don't pay attention to. The maps seem pretty accurate even when you're driving around construction areas with day-to-day reroutes and detours.

I never use Google Maps for travel with the RV. I use my Garmin RV GPS.
