GPS Options

How many use RV specific GPS apps as opposed to Google maps? I know about the actual RV GPS units by Garmin, TomTom, etc. but I am curious about apps. So far I have only used Google maps and have been lucky, with no mishaps, but just curious as to the thoughts of others.

Would not want to get into a situation where a low bridge or tight hairpin might become an issue.

Thanks in advance gang.

If you have RV Trip Wizard part of the subscription you can use RV Life, an RV GPS app.

RV Life does not require cell service for navigation. You an download the maps to your phone for use.

I love my Garmin 770. My backup is an app called copilot running on a phone or tablet.

we have a Rand McNally built-in GPS but keep my tablet on either Waze or Google Maps to look at traffic. we don't program our route into Waze or GM and instead just let it follow us. in bad weather i'll switch to a weather radar app.

I have a Garmin 770. My DW uses Google maps and double checks everything.

My 770 has live traffic and automatic detour available.

I prefer a Garmin and BaseCamp which is a Free download from Garmin. BC allows you to create routes on your computer and upload them to their GPS. No subscription. Nor do you need internet once BC is downloaded. Garmin also has YouTube videos to get you started.

I use RV Trip Wizard to plan the route and stops, then export the trip to a .csv file which goes on to the SD card. The .csv file has the stops. The SD card goes back into the built into the RV Rand McNally RV GPS, which knows my RV specs and can route accordingly.

Before starting out each day, I check Google Maps for road construction and iExit Trucks app for wherever we might need to stop for fuel.

During the trip, I’ll keep GM or Waze running on the phone, just to be aware of traffic accidents, etc that would cause delays. I keep iExit Trucks app running to know how far to rest areas and truck stops.
