GPS without cigarette lighter power

I'm looking for a GPS unit that is powered by usb, or internal battery only. I'd like to not have this long cord from the power source and use usb or internal power only. Any ideas? We currently have a Garmin RV660

What's the difference between a cord from the GPS to a nearby 12V outlet and a cord from the GPS to a nearby USB outlet?

If the GPS is running on only internal power you will be guaranteed that the battery will quit right when you need it the most...

The 660 is powered by 5v micro USB. The lighter adaptor drops the 12v to 5v. You could attach a battery pack to the unit and simply plug it in. The built-in battery won't provide enough time to be useful.

My Garmin 770 just has a mini usb plug on the back of the unit. Yes it came with a 12v cig lighter plug, but it also came with a short usb cable to do updates from a computer. When plugged into a usb it charges just like it does from the 12v adapter.

I would almost bet yours does too. If not find a 770 or later model.

no power from lighter

So, my lighter will not recognize my Garmin 660 but it recognizes other plugged in devices. I bought a new cord and that does not work either. I went and took both cords and garmin into my truck and they work fine. Any ideas out there?

Time for testing from the "other direction." Will the 12V outlet in the motorhome power other devices correctly? Have you put a meter on the 12V outlet to see if it is putting out 12V, and with the correct polarity?

I don’t know what you mean “my lighter will not recognize”. Recognize? Cigarette lighter plugs are not “smart”. They do not recognize anything, they are simply 12 volt receptacles.

Is it rusty on the inside of the receptacle? Is the tip of the power plug bent or recessed too much?

You can also just find a 12v to USB adapter, and use that to power your garmin.

I've run into a few lighter-style plugs that were actually a bit too short to make contact with the lighter socket.

It’s pretty easy to put in a USB outlet where ever you want and have room. I added one for my TST on the drivers kick panel and another in the dash where there was a blanked off outlet.

I have on of those and, when plugged into the socket, it charges my phone and operates my dashcam but....here's the strange thing...it will not work for my GPS. I took my GPS into my Ram truck and it works just fine off that socket. I looked at all my fuses and talked to Garmin. Not quite sure what to do next.

FIXED !

Halleluiah ! I found the problem. The fuse labeled "cigarette lighter, 20A" is not the one controlling it ! It's the 4th one over that says "Aux power...20A"...or something like that. I pulled that one out and BING...broken. Now everything works fine.

Thank you all
