I/84 is the best way. You can take I/78 to PA 33 to I/80 to US 209 to I/84 in NY but it's not any better at all.

I just came through there in the beginning of May, it wasn't bad at all. Some lane changes for construction but didn't run into any major issues and it was normal daytime, middle of the week traffic.

We travel 81/84 all the time from Cincinnati to Boston to visit DW's relatives. 84 is not a problem, but be forewarned that it is heavily traveled all the way from the NY-CT border to beyond Hartford. It's never held me up, but traffic is a snake at times depending on time of day and construction.

Thanks all, the last time I traveled i84, it was a mess through Waterbury, but that was 15 years ago. Other than traffic, smooth sailing. My motorcoach does not like expansion joints / cracks in the road.

I am in Boston now, I took 81 to 88 to 90 to 495 to Foxboro to Normandy Farms Family Campground

No construction except 2 bridges on I90 in Massachusetts that are a bit narrow, so slow down.
88 finished their construction so on the north side it’s all new near Albany.
( the last two yrs it was one lane) now perfect
I drive straight through Albany, (do not follow the signs and take 87 it adds about 15 miles to your trip) go thru downtown Albany, it’s not ever bad, and shortens the trip and your tolls are about $10 less

Been here a week, leaving Sunday morning
It’s been great with perfect weather.

Here is my bike ride around the campground

I took the I-81 - I-88 route last year on advice of a member here. It's longer, but it is an easy drive. The deciding factor for me was that we were going to camp somewhere along the way. We ended up at the KOA near Unadilla, NY. It is a very good place for an overnight.
