Just a quick update. I drove down to Lancaster PA this past weekend. Took I-87 to I-287 down from VT. From junction of I-287 and I-78, road was rough all the way across I-78 with tons of truck traffic (Thursday). Got off onto Route 100 in Allentown and took 100 to Route 23 to Lancaster. Returning on Sunday, retraced Route 23 to Route 100, but then took 22 East to 33 North to Route 209 North. Continued on Route 209 all the way to Kingston, NY, where I connected back with the NY thruway. Travel was pretty slow on 209 with speed limits of 35-45 through the Delaware Water Gap and road was quite rough, comparatively speaking to I-78. Think I saved about 25 miles and time was about the same. Would be a toss-up on a future trip to choose which way to go.
