Has I-40 improved from Memphis west to OKC?

About 10 wears ago, we drove our 35' Adventurer west on I-40. Drive was great until hitting Memphis, TN and west, all the way to Oklahoma City. Between Memphis and OKC the concrete road separations were so bad that we actually said that "If this is going to be like this, we don't ever want to RV again". It was continual bang, bang, bang for hundreds of miles. It got nice after OKC, as I remember.

Can anyone report any improvement to that horrible area?

Richard

This past year

Drove the section you mentioned this past year in our Adventurer gasser towing a toad. There were a few rough sections but overall it was tolerable. I'd drive it again.
Our biggest problem was it seemed a bit boring?

We just pulled into West Memphis from OKC. The worst part of the I-40 drive is IN Oklahoma City!! The city roads are HORRIBLE!! I-40 east is worse in Oklahoma then Arkansas, which surprised me. The road has sections that are rough but tolerable. The only section of current US interstates that I would personally declare as INTOLERABLE is I-70 east bound from Glenwood Springs CO to Golden CO!! Oh, and expect VERY heavy truck traffic from Little Rock to Memphis!

I live in central Oklahoma and my office is in OKC.
I drive about 30 miles of I-40 Mon. - Fri. and on further east of OKC pretty often.
10 years ago, probably the worst part of I-40 in Oklahoma was actually right in OKC... Felt like it could tear vehicles apart. The old "crosstown expressway" has been destroyed and a new ground level section of I-40 takes you through the downtown area. Just west of downtown OKC still has about a 10 mile section that is pretty rough. Once you get past that section, not too bad.
Then there was the section of I-40 between Okemah and Henryetta... Oh My! As mentioned, the expansion joints were terrible... especially in a longer vehicle. It is much better than it was 10 years ago. There has been a lot of construction and work... still a few short sections that are waiting on replacement, but in general, so much better than 10 years ago.

IMO, Oklahoma has had some of the worst roads of any state.... except Louisiana. Took a motorcycle trip down into Louisiana a few years ago... by far, worse than Oklahoma.
