Heading west on I-10 in Louisiana
Hello fellow RVers!
Would it be more feasible to take I-10 w to I-12 w back to I-10 w? Does it save time? How's the traffic? Thanks as usual..

That's how I've done it as you will save time/mileage as long as your destination is further west.

That is the best way to go, try to avoid Baton Rouge around rush hour, the interstates tend to be at a standstill for a couple of hours for the morning and evening rush hours. After Katrina hit New Orleans back in 2005 the population of Baton Rouge nearly doubled, and there has been no significant upgrade to the road system to support all the added traffic congestion.

Be advised, we just transited I10 through Louisiana and it is indeed in the worst condition of any road we have traveled throughout the U.S. Chuck

What is your destination through LA on I10? Are you already committed to travel on I10? There may be better alternatives if you are not already on I10.

We'll be going thru to the west coast just after Thanksgiving. Hopefully by then I-10 will be in better shape. Thanks to all who responded!

Folks are saying I-10 in Louisiana is in bad shape. Please elaborate on bad shape. Will our big rig be able to get through? Are there detours? What are the road surface conditions? Does this extend into TX? Thanks all as usual..

The road surface is in horrible condition. Full of broken road surfaces, very large cracks, potholes, and washboard surfaces like nothing we have seen anywhere else in the U.S. There is some construction but no road closures or detours that we saw. The construction will be ongoing for years as will the bad roadway. We had a cabinet come loose from the wall and the breakaway switch from the toad bounced loose, causing the brakes to be applied as we were going through Baton Rogue. Everything in every cabinet and the fridge were bounced around and moved. Will need to have the front end completely checked as soon as possible, it took such a beating. We will never do it again if it means a 1,000 mile detour. Chuck

I travel this frequently. Baton Rouge at I10 and I12 is a disaster during rush hour. So is New Orleans during rush hour. I typically stay on I10 through new orleans if it is not rush hour. You will have no issue with the roads in your motorhome. I personally think there are worse highways in the middle to the west side of Texas.Baton Rouge is malfunction junction going either way. Too many highways merging into one, but completely doable.

And you drive this route in what? There is no way you can say there is nothing wrong with this route in an motorhome. Chuck

I live around Baton Rouge and travel I-10 regularly. You will be okay in your motorhome going through Louisiana. I agree with what others have said about rush hour traffic in both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I prefer the route of I-10 to I-12 to I-10. I also agree that there are worse roads than I-10 to be found in other parts of the US.

The only section of road anywhere near as bad as I-10 in LA is a section of I-40 around Kingman AZ.
