The trip to CA is mostly to visit our daughter. So, on the way from NC to CA, we will only need good places for overnight. Such as Walmart (if they're safe) and campgrounds. We drove in our car for the first time last year, so we already know how long it takes in a car... Plus, we stayed in Hotels on the way at that time; and on the way there we kinda just want to get there...
On the way back however, we have decided to visit folks in Oxford, Nebraska and Vine Grove, Kentucky. Places to stop overnight will also very helpful for that route. I sort of looked into a campground owned by Ft Knox, KY to stay at, which looked pretty good. (especially price wise) So, I suppose places to stay is really what I am looking for! Sorry about the confusion.

Wal*Mart - All Stays - https://www.allstays.com/c/wal-mart-locations.htm -
IMHO Wal*Mart is a viable option, especially if you are just doing A to B - if there is any issue they will have security - they have lights and if you check with the Manager he will usually let you know where to park - out of the way and Not near the Delivery Route - let you get some sleep - Only problem is the Generator on a Gas unit is not very Quiet (A/C).
Enjoy your visit,
On Edit - you will likely only average 50 mph in the RV - just need to keep that in Mind.

New Mexico has the best roads on I-40 Arizona's roads SUCK tons of craters on the " slow Lane" you might want to run the fast lane as its much smoother... drive safe.. plenty to see...

Heading West soon....
Made the trip 3 years ago to and from Lubbock. A nice place was Dancing Eagle RV Park at the Casino, not much shade but had a nice breeze the afternoon we were there. West of Albuquerque. $10 Full RV Hook up. As others have said be prepared for hot afternoon. Drive early, stop early and use their electricity for AC.

The Anaheim RV Park looks OK. Is your daughter by here self or are you visiting her family too. The reason I ask is that I would highly recommend looking into the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort and Marina. This is a fairly large RV park and is real nice but pricy. Lots of things to do on and off the property. If it is just your daughter maybe she could come down and stay in your RV with you as a mini vacation. If you are coming all the way from the east coast and are not planning to do anything at Disneyland I would not choose to stay in Anaheim. Newport Beach is a destination city and the Dunes is top notch for RVers. However, call asap for availability.

We're headed east from Mesa, AZ in July, our overnight stops along I-40 as of now will be:
1. Sky City Casino RV Park, NM Exit 102 $22 Good Sam (this is always our first stop, DW likes to spend a few bucks on the slots).
2. Road Runner RV Park, Oklahoma City. Haven't stayed there but looks OK for overnight).
3. Tom Sawyer Mississippi River Park, West Memphis, AR.
These may change based on actual travel times, but this is our rough plan for now.
We have also stayed at the Overnight RV Park in Amarillo, TX (nothing fancy, lots of permanent units, accepts Good Sam). Would stay there again.
Have stayed at Walmarts and Rest Areas along the way, but always figure that if I can find a campsite, I would rather use their Electricity instead of running the generator all night.
When planning and when on the road for overnight stops, look for Passport America parks first, then Good Sam, KOA, then Walmart or Rest Areas.

Last September I drove from NJ to CA on I80. Stopped at a Ohio RV rest stop ($20) and a couple of RV parks for ther other overnight stops all close to or over $40. Took 6 days. When coming back in mid December was going to take I40 but the cold weather forced me south to I10. The difference was that I stayed at a casino, truck stops, rest stops and Walmarts only. Got more driving done this way since I had to be in the RV parks by 5-6 p.m. to check in. Took me 5 days. Yeah longer hours of driving is not everyones cup of tea. But made it home a couple of days before Christmas. Allstays app is a big help in finding parking locations whether they be RV parks or Walmarts. BTW the more you try paking at Walmart the more comfortable you will become with staying over night there.

When in travel mode we always looked for a Wal*Mart, then on the third day a campground to drain the tanks and refill the water tank.
