That's the way to go. You'll drop down the grade into the San Fernando Valley on the 405 and merge onto the 101 Frwy. It will be busy, just take you time. We always get on the 101 Frwy a little further north in Ventura (where we live).
There is freeway construction through Carpenteria that has been going on for years. As you get into Santa Barbara, your GPS will want you to take the State Street off ramp and use Hwy 154 through Lake Cachuma because it's a shorter route but climbs through a steep grade. Just stay on the 101 Fry all the way to Avila.
If you haven't been there before, the Avilla Farms are a fun place to visit. We like to drive over to Morro Bay as a fun day trip. The little town of Arroyo Grande is also fun for antique stores and restaurants. It's just a few miles south of Avila Beach.
