Hwy. 2 Minnesota to Glacier

Has anyone traveled east on Hwy. 2 from Minnesota to Glacier National Park. If so, may I have information, good or bad. Thanks!

Minnesota to Glacier Nt'l Park would be Westbound .

Yes we have a few times. ... a very nice leisurely way to go 'west'. We've done it east, also. Plan to stop at Fort Peck Corp of Engr campground in Montana - great. Then when you leave you'll begin to see the Rocky Mtns. On that drive you'll soon realize why Montana is called 'Big Sky Country'!

Very nice route, friendly small towns, slower pace and a part of the country you miss on the freeways. If you end up in Shelby for the night, check out Lake Sheloole Campground And Rv Park. Quiet, inexpensive, city park with a paved walking/bike trail around a reservoir and close to town. Also in Malta, Trafton Park CG - another pleasant inexpensive city park, walking distance to town.

I meant west, not east.

We traveled US 2 from Washington State to St. Ignace , Michigan several years ago. After a stop at Glacier National Park, we wanted to look for a scenic route back to S. C. We decided to continue on US 2 which was an excellent decision for us as it proved to be a scenic and laid back drive.

As an added benefit, we had a wonderful time in Mackinac, Mich.

Many times!

That's a great choice of routing. The roads are good, there are many small, friendly towns along the way, you'll have no difficulty finding fuel (just remember that it's not uncommon to drive 50 -75 miles before you come to the next town), great scenery, generally more friendly traffic than on the Interstate system.

As you travel west from Havre, MT, by the time you're approaching Shelby, MT, you'll start to see, off on the western horizon, the Rocky Mountains beginning to appear. Pretty neat, the first time you see it.

Be sure to make your reservations early for your time in Glacier National Park. It's become so busy that entry to the park has become by reservation only.

Here's a link that might give you a few ideas: https://glacier.org/glacier-must-dos...4aAkLmEALw_wcB

Although a bit 'pricey', the Red Bus Tours (https://www.glaciernationalparklodges.com/red-bus-tours) are worth the expense. Be advised, they book up far in advance.

Take care,
Stu

Hope you can make the trip early in the season. Towards August and on there's a big chance of seeing a lot of smoke from forest fires in Montana and other states. The smoke travels far.
