Hwy 49/Hwy 98 from Jackson to Mobile

Is this road OK for a 41' motorhome pulling a car? I actually would get on Hwy 49 at Jackson, connect to Hwy 98, then on to Hwy 63 and down to I-10. It looks like it is all a 4 lane road.

We drove that route a few years ago and it was fine. You do know you would be headed right into Hurricane Sally if you are going in the next day or two?

Yes I know, but I won't be doing until about a week from now. Our home and neighbors are being pounded right now from Sally while I am in NW Arkansas. By taking this route it would reduce my miles by 123 miles from the route down I-55 to Hammond then on to Mobile and then home.

We have driven that route many times. Just get on 65 south when you get to Mobile then down to I-10. Don't take 98 through the city.

Being we took a direct hit by Sally I will be taking this route to get home quicker. I will stay at Paul B Johnson, so may continue straight down Hwy 49 to Gulfport to I-20. I want to avoid any areas where trees may be blocking the road and I-20 would get cleared faster. We would get home a week from today by taking this route. We are in NW Arkansas right now visiting relatives. Hopefully the power at home will be back on by that time. We don't want to leave to early where we get blocked by trees.

Think you have your highway confused. I20 goes thru Jackson and I10 is above Gulfport. Not sure how far you're traveling on I10. I10 is currently closed at the Alabama/Florida line due to river flooding the roadway. I don't think you will have any trouble traveling your original route as these are 4 lane highways. Anytime I go to Florida I travel your route to avoid going thru Semmes, Al.

You are correct, I meant I-10. I won't get to this route for about 5 more days. I also will be taking off at the Baldwin Beach Express. I will be spending one night at Paul B Johnson State Park and this is why I am thinking of continuing on down Hwy 49 instead of circling back to Hwy 98. I will need to buy fuel at Grand Bay, Alabama (TA). Surely they will have their power back on there (if they lost it). The power is off at home and I suspect it will take days to get it back on. Even if I tried to get there right now I could not with the trees and power lines that are down.

Well it looks like Hurricane Beta will soak that area on Tuesday so we may reroute to go through Montgomery, Al.

We got here yesterday and it has been on and off rain all day. We are only 170 miles from home and will head there first thing this morning. We have been on the road for five weeks and too South Dakota and back. We ended up cutting our planned trip by three days to get home faster to check on everything after Sally. The latest map showed the actual route of Sally came directly over our home.

Have a safe trip.
