Hwy 89A thru Marble Canyon and Vermilion Cliffs

Headed north from Phoenix to Washington state with 36 foot fifth wheel. Sounds like 89 is good but would like to take a detour thru this area. What is 89A like for pulling a fifth wheel? Or would it be better to stop at a park near the junction of 89 and 89a and do a day trip?

Thanks

89A is a good highway but you'll have a big climb up to Jacob Lake. It just depends how you feel about your truck on climbs. Many RVers drive this way (Grand Canyon North Rim is a short distance from Jacob Lake) and we've done both directions with our motorhome.

From there if you wanted to get over to I-15 do this: from Jacob Lake pick up 389 at Fredonia, AZ and it becomes UT59. Go west on Hwy 9 to I-15... a very pretty drive.

In the Vermillion Cliffs area of 89A, you’ll have a stretchy with no shoulder. That is the only complaint I have concerning that route. The climb up to Jacob Lake is not bad but has a few twists. Look at it on a good map program. I prefer that route to going through Page and have driven it a number of times.

We traveled 89a this past September and had no problems at all. We are right at 55' with the dolly and toad. Very scenic and worth doing. We saw several 5th wheels on 89a.

We traveled that road about 5 years ago, in our Volvo semi pulling our living quarters horse trailer. There is a section with no shoulder, as mentioned before, but it is a beautiful route to take and we didnít have any problems. We have since changed to our motor home and a toad, and absolutely would not hesitate to travel that way again !!
Safe travels !!

Thanks for the input. We ended up going up thru Page. Definitely want to do that 89A later though. I appreciate the replies very much.
