I'm not sure where you are talking about. I-24 and I-40 come together in Nashville, but Chattanooga has I-24 and I-75 and then a little further west, I-59 splits off of I-24 and heads south towards Birmingham.

we do it all the time in our 42' and its not bad, but we don't go thru during work rush hours. You could take HWY 41 or 41A, but that could be 2 lane roads.

Just came through yesterday from I-59 (B'ham) to I-24 east to Chattanooga and south on I-75 at about 6pm.

Traffic was somewhat heavy (late rush hour) but really not that bad. I am somewhat familiar with the area and do not know any alternate routes that I would recommend.
