I-285 West of Atlanta ALERT!! As of 1/28/2020

Driving Northbound on I-285 (going around the west side) somewhere within 10 miles of where I-285 rejoins I-85 on the Northern end, suddenly the speed limit reduced to 35 MPH. Nobody slowed down and after a bit of slower driving I rejoined the speed the other drivers were maintaining.

Suddenly the lane I was in had terrible bumps and chunks of the road in it. There was no way I could miss the bumps and just had to let my RV take a beating. My recommendation, should you choose this route, is to honor the reduced speed limit and if you can see far enough ahead, switch lanes in time to avoid this chaos. I was traveling at night and couldn’t see the problem until I was on it.

Similar experience 2 months ago. Traveling northbound on the inner loop of 285 around I-20 west of ATL. Traffic came to a screeching halt suddenly. I got stopped in time but the lady behind me kept on coming and slammed into our rear. The car in front of us hurtled into the truck he was following. No one hurt luckily. Totaled hers out and beaucoup $$$ of repairs on ours.

Traveling in and around ATL is just wonderful. (Right)

I stay off 285, its for trucks. Just go straight through, especially at night, just not at evening rush hour

I knew better, I previously decided I-285 was just too rough but blindly let my GPS push onto I-285. . . . Should have stayed on I-85 straight through.

If you are approaching Atlanta from the south on either I-85 or I-75 and intend to travel i-85 north toward Greenville, take I-285 around the East side. When I go north on I-85 and intend to continue north on I-75 I will take the west side of I-285 but that is the only time. It sounds like the OP was on the "top end" between 75 and 85, which is a bad section of road.

If I am traveling on I 20 from the West going to Athens, Ga. What is the recommendation for going through or around Atlanta.

I-20 is one of the better roads to go straight through on. Just stay in one of the inner lanes.

I-20 east, straight through to Conyers. Then at 138 left towards Monroe to US 78 to Athens. We go run that route going to/from Birmingham on business.

A longer but MUCH better ride is to continue east on I-20 till you get to Madison. Take exit 114 and go left back over the interstate. In less than a mile, you come to a traffic light (Chic Fil A on the left) and you turn right onto Bypass 441, and just DRIVE. Its four lane for a ways, then two lane quite a ways, then back to four lane, and you arrive at the south middle of the 10 loop around Athens.

I've driven the 138/78 route and it sucks compared to going thru Madison. (which is where the TV series In The Heat of The Night (Carroll O'Conner was the police chief) was filmed). You don't go thru town, the 441 bypass around Madison is great. Scope that area out on Google Maps as there are places to eat, get fuel, and Wal-Mart, all in that one location.

I just drove the 138/78 route back in November to go look at a truck camper that was for sale. Came back thru Madison, much better.
