I 40 Grand Canyon east

We will be traveling from the Grand Canyon to the east coast. Our finale destination is Charleston WV. We would like to avoid the interstate (I40), just because we prefer the back roads. Any suggestions on routes?
I also understand the I 40 bridge at Memphis is not open.

You don't say what your RV is.

Yes, I-40 bridge over the Mississippi River at Memphis is closed indefinitely. There is I-55 in Memphis, but I understand there is a long, long delay. There is I-155 across the River from I-57 in MO to Dyersburg, TN.

You say you don't want to go I-40, but a lot of it overlayed the old Route 66.
I have driven I-40 from Nashville to Kingman, AZ and as far as scenery, all the desert scrub brush looks the same in AZ and NM and TX panhandle, no matter what highway you are on.

If you are not in a hurry, US-60 goes for a lot of the east-west distance that you are headed, there are some low clearances on it in Louisville, KY. US-60 will be much slower, because of every little town you go through.

US-60 DOES cross the Mississippi and Ohio rivers at Cairo, IL.

Once you get to Louisville, you just about have to take I-64 thru the mountains to Charleston.

Get a Rand McNally Motor Carrier's Atlas to check for low clearances and restricted routes along your journey.
