I-84 east to Wallowa Mts. Cabbage Hill & hwy. 82?

We are thinking of heading to the Wallowa Mountains/ Joseph, Oregon. We have driven I-84 from Pendleton to La Grande in a car and not crazy about it. Comments? Also, has anyone taken Hwy. 204 to 82 instead? 204 looks ok from my Mountain Directory Guide. Thanks!

I can speak only for the I-84 section from PDT to La Grande. Have done it more times than I can count, pulling a 9,000# TT and the rig in my signature. Never any problems, it is a good road, the grades are easy to handle, the road along the River before La Grande twists and turns but it is four lane, don’t over drive the road and you should have no problem. Cabbage Hill going toward PDT requires you to manage your speed and braking on the down hill grade.

If you didn't like 84 in a car, you won't have any love for 204!!! 2 lane, twisty, a couple of 180 degree switchbacks on the way up to Tollgate. They have worked on it a bunch lately, some more passing lanes on way up, but I don't think they have done anything near the top. After Tollgate, it is a good road, mostly a slow downhill to Elgin. Not too many curves or major curves. It is slower than going I84, and is more scenic than the freeway. Have used it a few times, but last time with our 34 ft trailer, I decided not to pull over it again. Very doable, but not relaxing!!!

I like 204 but I generally like to avoid the interstate and semi trucks.

Take your time and enjoy the drive.

BTW there are some great forest service roads and scenic drives in that part of Oregon. Watch the weather this time of year.
