Driving from British Columbia to Palm Springs

Hello! My husband and I are planning to camp in Palm Springs most of the month of january 2022. We'redriving from southern British Columbia (Osoyoos) and wondering which is the safest way to get across the mountains to Seattle or Portland so we can catch I-5. We will be pulling a 30 foot trailer. Our roads to Vancouver BC have been destroyed by flooding ☹️.

Here's a really good resource: Mountain directory for truckers https://mountaindirectory.com/

Boat?

If it was me I would take US 97 to WA 17. Through Moses Lake and it joins US 395. South to Pasco. US 12 and US 730 into Umitilla. I-84 west to Biggs Jct. then pick up US 97 again. Long hard pull out of the Columbia Basin. Follow 97 till it joins I-5 at Weed.

Or follow I-84 into Portland and take I-205 south till it rejoins I-5 again.

If you take I-5 you will have the mountains in Southern Oregon and North California. Going around Pasco/Kennewick on 12/730 is flat as it follows the river. I-84 can be a bear between The Dallas and Troutdale at that time of year

January going down through Central Oregon Bend to K. Falls and can get COLD.

Oregon Road Info https://tripcheck.com/
Washington Road info https://wsdot.com/travel/real-time/map/

Safe travel. Watch the weather and be prepared to hole up for 24-30 hours.

US 730 is my summer base and the Las Vegas my winter base. You can not avoid mountains but you can avoid places where you can get trapped for weeks.

My advice is to stay inland because it is semi-arid. The devil you know kind of thing. If you made it Pasco you are prepared for cold weather.

From US 730 to 37 to Pendleton OR (fill up here). This the short I take or you can go to Hermiston and pick up the interstate.

Take US 395 to Burns (fill up). This will take you through the Blue Mountains so do it during the day when no snow is predicted. Wildhorse Casino has a campground if you need to layover and be entertained.

Take 78 to US-95 to Winnemucca (fill up). I continue south on 95. You may want to cut over on US-6 to US 395. I have done that route going north to see death valley but I do not know about winter.

I have done I-5. Too much traffic.

Have chains for the truck and the trailer. Those roads can be very icy. I don't get up there much in the winter and twice I have had to wait for the road to reopen.

Did you look at your other post, I replied there?

What beaverfeaver said. It can be ugly or a nice drive, but odds are you will have a headwind.

Be ready to laydown for a day or two and that can happen anywhere between home and Redding, CA.

Oregon: https://tripcheck.com/
Washington: https://wsdot.com/travel/real-time/map/

Know chain requirements BEFORE you go. OR and CA can be rather expensive if you get caught barefoot when chains are required, 4X4's have some exceptions but you will be required to have them on your trailer.

Be prepared to spend a lot in gas/fuel prices. Gas and Fuel are at an all time high in California and are expected to be much higher by Christmas

Good Luck in your travels
