I4 Construction Through Orlando

A year and a half ago we drove through the I4 construction in Orlando and I thought the Jersey barriers seemed close. I considered it the worst place we drove through on our entire trip to the west coast and back. We’ll today I read in the Wall Street Journal that in order to have more room for the construction, they narrowed the travel lanes by a foot. I guess I wasn’t imagining things! Be forewarned!

Sounds like my home town. In order to make more lanes, there is not grading and paving etc. They just add a line at the cost of a few buckets of paint.

We live just south of Orlando. I-4 is an absolute mess through the Orlando area. Numerous changes to exits and entrance ramps are made very often. As mentioned, lanes have been narrowed, some of the temporary paving is rough, and traffic is horrendous!

If you need to get past Orlando, or to Orlando area attractions, I strongly recommend using SR 417. It is a toll road, but well worth it to minimize the hassle if I-4. It may add a few miles to the trip, but you should be able to maintain a reasonable safe speed.

And....if you absolutely MUST use I-4, do NOT depend on your GPS being accurate. GPS should be fine on 417.

We drove it two months ago (before apparently narrowing the lanes) and it was a mess then. Being stuck in the area for a month we relied on route 417 a much better ride but $$$
