I57 North of Effingham IL
Curious of the quality of highway I57N to I80
Deciding between I55 N or I57 N from St Louis?

I 57 North
Strange that this is the first posting I've seen on here relating to Illinois roads.
Living in Illinois all my life, actually between the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and Indialantic or Naples Florida, and having the experience of traveling thru about 43 of our continental United States over the years, I can tell you that almost all Illinois roads just plain suck !!
Seems like all you ever see are the 'road construction' signs but the roads still leave a lot to be desired. Bumpy and full of pot holes.
If you're going to travel thru our fine state, be prepared to endure the rough ride. - I will say, however, that the worst, by far, road we've ever traveled is thru the state of Indiana. I-65 is really bad - more pot holes & ruts than Illinois has, if you can believe that.

Only a short stretch of I55 from Mattoon to Champaign last week but it is in fine shape. Haven't been on I57 for some time. Jim.

We've been using I-57 for an alternative to I-65 (the worst of the worst that caused over $1000 of damage to my coach several years ago). I-57 is not that bad at all IMO. Yes, there are some bad spots but compared to I-65 it's wonderful. We're taking I-57 southbound tomorrow on our way towards southern Tennessee. I can't speak for I-55 as it's been awhile since I've driven our coach on it.

Another warning about Illinois roads - avoid I-355 like the plague. It's under heavy construction right now and it's a living nightmare. We found that out last Friday as we endured a white knuckle ride through 10 miles of narrow, uneven lanes.

We just came through Illinois on I-39 to I-74 to I-75 to I-24 in mid July and didn’t really have any problems. We have been that way going north and south several times in the pst two years. It seems like some sections have been resurfaced. I would say the worst parts are some of I-39 north of Bloomington and I-57 south of Marion until you get to I-24.
We just came back from a trip to Indy on I-65 and much of it has been resurfaced in the past two years. IMHO, the worst part of I-65 is in Kentucky north of Elizabethtown to just south of Louisville, KY.
Hey, rvguy02, watch for possible lane closure on EB I-24 on the bridge over the Tennessee River in Kentucky. If you’re coming through the Nashville area, avoid the period between 3:00 PM through 6:00 PM unless you love bumper to bumper traffic.

I always take I57 south from I80 rather than take I80 around the lake and I65.
It's not great, but much better than I65.

I'm not certain why folks are badmouthing I-57 so much. It isn't smooth as glass but for the most part it isn't that bad either. We drive I-57 both north and south between I-74 and I-80 without any real issues.
After driving some if Indiana's roads...I've come to appreciate IL pot holes.

This is absolutely the best route south thru Illinois. Once south of I-80 on Rt-39 the truck traffic is much less, and it really is a stress free drive. Done it a bunch of times.
