When we travel to New England, we typically take I-81 north from I-80 to up around Scranton, and then jog over to I-84 to eventually hook up with the Mass Pike. The initial section of I-81 up to around Wilkes-Barre is rough. It just seems that the points at which the pavement sections meet is always uneven, significantly enough to make for a harsh, unpleasant ride. I can only figure that the combination of poor, natural underlayment and winter freezing temperatures are enough cause these pavement sections to move relative to one another. It's not like they haven't tried to fix that section of the interstate, but the same issues always return. Farther North, the road seems to ride better. Just my observations.
