How much time do you have? According to GPS it is a 3 hour difference. I've driven much of Hwy 17 between Williamsburg and Savannah, I think it is a bigger difference. You are slowing down going through a number of small towns and 35 & 45 mph zones. It is a somewhat picturesque drive compared to the interstate.

Google Maps gives 7 hours, 11 min for I95 and 10H32M for Rt 17 (generic Williamsburg to Savannah).

I95 or us 17

My vote is to take US 17 to Jacksonville NC , Then NC 24 (4 lane most of the way) to Fayetteville NC. From there you can choose I-95 or US301

We have traveled 17 in the past a couple of times. But it has been a while since we have been on it. Between Mrytle Beach and Charleston was some small individual stands on the side of the road. These individuals were selling "sweet grass baskets". These are hand-made baskets and are beautifully crafted pieces. Some are a couple of hundred dollars, but beautiful.
Wife has 3 different pieces, she used to have four. Our one dachshund got ahold of it; it was destroyed.

South of Charleston 17 will join I-95, but you can avoid it, if you are careful looking for the signs. This is at an area called "Point South".

We’ve traveled from Charleston, SC to Fredericksburg, VA on 17. We didn’t find it particularly scenic. Lots of traffic lights, little towns, changes in speed limit, etc. It is a slow, almost relaxing trip compared to the interstate. However, once you are south of Richmond, VA you have missed some of the worst of 95. Aside from some construction zones, you can just set the cruise control and go.

My greyhound chewed the handle off a small basket I have, been meaning to get it repaired for years. My sister's lab shredded hers.

When heading south we take hwy 17 all the way to exit 33 on I-95. Watch out for McClellanville, n I t as active as it used to be but still a known speed trap. Depending on where you're heading in the Savannah area it is only 33 miles to the stateline. If heading to Tybee, take exit 5, the Hardeeville exit.

If you want to GET TO the destination - the interstate

If you want to enjoy the trip - anything but the interstate.

However, if you don't want to take the RV anyplace except a controlled access highway, well, you've already made that choice.

Personally I would drive 5 hours out of the way to avoid I-95 in SC. I thought i was going to break and axle or shock in our RV. Every trip since going to FL we have avoided 95.

No question, 17. But then we are seldom in a rush to get somewhere so we are almost always looking for alternate routes to an interstate.

When we came back from FL in March they were actually working on I95 in SC. I almost ran off the road in shock.
The issue there is the high water table in the south end of the state from the GA line to about Walterboro washing out under the pavement.
