Indianapolis Routing

We are heading out soon for the east coast from AZ and wondering about going thru or around Indy. I did this route in April of 2019 and I think I went straight through Indianapolis eastbound on 70 to Columbus. I'm going over my routing now and I see the 465 beltway and I'm wondering if that would be a good idea.

I'm pulling our 27-5L and it will be on a Tuesday about mid day. Creating a route in my Garmin BaseCamp software takes me straight through on I-70 using my RV's profile for calculating the route.

I would appreciate any input from anyone with recent Indianapolis experiences.

Not sure about west bound, but east bound a week or so ago was closed in downtown Indianapolis.

Thanks - I just opened up INDOT 511 site and it looks like that whole 1-70 & I-65 area downtown is under major construction. Looks like going around on 465 in both directions is a good idea.

I went from Columbus to Kansas City (and back) about 6 weeks ago.
I 70 thru Indy was shut down to thru traffic. I 465 around town.
Also, East of Indy there was construction on both EB and WB lanes (somewhere between exit 123, 1nd 104).
In their infinite wisdom, One lane in each direction.
I bypassed this EB mess by exiting I 465 at US 40 (Exit 46). Took US 40 EB all the way to Indiana SR 3 NB. Then back to I 70. US 40 is 4 lanes and an easy drive.

Granted things may have changed since My travels thru that area. Good Luck and safe travels!

In making numerous trips both eastbound & westbound in that area, I always went AROUND Indy. Road closures aside, it's always a hassle to go through a large city.

Thanks for the heads up. Yes - on 70 east of Indy it looks like that EB crossover single lane is still there until the end of Nov with a 11.5' width limit. And there is a signed ALT Route using 40.

That may be good timing to get off for fuel and coffee. Like you said exit 465 at 40. Run 40 EB, get fuel and coffee and then get back on 70 at 9.

US 40 has some pretty cool history - That part is built on the old "National Road" - the first major improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Built between 1811 and 1837

We came thru there in the middle of July going from Terre Haute to Cincinnati, I-70 is gone. The I-70 is under major construction it was closed to thru traffic and they send you on 465 around.
If you stay on I-70 going thru Ohio when you get to the Rt 42 exit there are 3 big truck stops there. There are a:
Flying J - north of 70 it is a pain sometimes getting out to head back to 70
T/A - south of 70
Speedway - south of 70 and about 1/4 mile past the T/A truck stop.

There also used to be a Camping World there but it packed up and left, it is now outside of Dayton as a Gander Mountain, so if you need something you will need to plan on that instead of the Camping World in London, Ohio.
But there is a big Camping World in Richmond, Ind. right before the Ohio state line.
