Interstate 80

Hi all. We're going to be taking Interstate 80 westbound through Wyoming this summer. Is there anything about general road conditions we need to be aware of? Any suggestions about rv campgrounds or places to see? Thanks in advance for any input.

We take I-80 from Cheyenne into Utah on our way to Oregon every year. Always seems to be road construction somewhere along the way but never has been a big deal. The only CG we've stopped at on that leg was in Lyman, WY--a mom and pop KOA. Quaint but nice and super nice folks. Have wanted to stop in Green River but it never fit our schedule. Enjoy the ride.

Well, we lost a trailer on I80 in WY in 2009 but other than that, no problem. Oh, BTW, watch out for the wind going over Elk Mtn Pass west of Laramie. Just because the wind warning signs are not lit does not mean that you won't experience dangerous winds.

We did a 13,000 round trip to Alaska last Aug through Nov. All that mileage over some completely torn up roads and the only chip we got was on I80 in a construction zone in Wyoming.

Here's a good boondocking spot:

Dugway BLM Campground - 41.859903, -107.054671*
Access from this I80 location - 41.781533, -107.123315*

Lots of truck traffic. What's your destination. There may be a secondary road to get there that gives you more scenery.

For all the beauty that Wyoming has, the route along 80 is not that spectacular.

Going from east to west:
- A humongous statue of the Virgin Mary right at the state line
- Territorial Prison in Laramie
- Lincoln statue near the highest point on I-80
- Fort Bridger
- cheap gas at a Flying J in Evanston!

Not sure where you are starting out but we make the trip from northeast Nebraska to Bend, OR about every year and the best route for us is US 20 to Shoshone WY, US 26 to Idaho Falls, and US 20 to Bend. Traffic is light most of the way and very scenic. The only interstate section are about 50 miles south of Casper and from Mountain Home to Caldwell in ID.

I agree about watching the wind, it flipped an 18 wheeler just a mile or so behind me outside Laramie while I was stopped at the visitor center on I80 by the pass in the summer of 2017.

As to places to stay in the area, the KOA Journey in Laramie is a bit disappointing,, though ok for a night, gravel parking lot in between a couple of mobile home parks, by the interstate. If you like dry camping try Vedauwoo national forest campground near the pass about 15 miles east of Larmie, it is at about 8,000 feet so fairly cool at night even in the summer, though this depends on the size of your RV. Good for smaller RV's up to about 30 ft, though a few sites will fit larger, first come first serve, and tends to fill up by mid afternoon in the summer when I have been there (twice in summer of 2017).

Wind and lots of it cross wind. Only did it once with a F250 PSD and Arctic Fox 22H that was impervious to wind. I now prefer I90.

When I saw the headline of your post the first thing that came to mind was wind - which looks like was on everyone else’s mind too! If you have the time to dip south of Green River to stay in the Flaming Gorge area that’s pretty.

Luckily it only snows once a year in Wyoming but the wind blows it back and forth across the state the rest of the year.

That's pretty much the truth.

There's a saying in Wyoming: "Wyoming wind festival, January 1st through December 31"

Living in the Cheyenne area pretty much sucks for the wind. It gets kind of tiresome and winter is the worst part of it for sure.
