We personally like interstate 40 into CA.

Not sure where you live in Iowa, but taking I-35 to Wichita to OKC, keeps you on major roads. For there I-40 will take you right into L.A

I-40 has a number of high passes, but they are pretty gradual, over many many, miles.

Note: If ice storms are predicted, continue to Dallas on I-35, then head west on I-20 to I-10. This would add many miles, but safer then braving an ice storm.

And don't forget border inspection stations. They will definitely ask about fruits, vegetables and plants. Oh, and don't forget no firearms.

Thanks for sharing that link. I read through it, but no mention of fire arms?

They won't check for firearms. Only the ag items (fresh fruits/veg, livestock, firewood).

But we do have terrible firearm laws so make sure you are good there if you do bring something along.

I-40 ends in Barstow, CA

I-40 ends in Barstow, Ca. You then pick up I-15 into LA. Barstow is in the Mojave Desert also known as a high (elevation) desert. The climb up to Cajon Pass is not bad on that side. It’s the decent into San Bernardino that will make your sphincter pucker!
