Jersey Shore to Disney's Fort Wilderness

We'll be traveling south on I95.
Question, what is the best route to take to get around Washington DC?

Just Washington? What about Baltimore and Richmond? For a fun trip, I'd go down the Garden State to Cape May-Lewes Ferry. US 9 to US 13 S, Across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, around Norfolk and then head to I-95 in NC. A few tolls, but a much more memorable trip.

The best route is DON'T! Second best is I495 East beltway, preferably late at night or on Sunday. If you have to do it during the day, make it noon but expect major beep-and-creep traffic jams on I95 south of Washington.

Another option is to swing way west and go down I81, then come back on I64 east to Richmond and pick up I95 again.

I hate the extra miles, but next time we head to the Williamsburg area from our home in eastern PA we're going to do the I81/I64 thing.

We live in North Central Massachusetts and left Myrtle Beach last April by navigating to I84 East. A little longer but no NY traffic. I always choose I84 when traveling South when ever possible. GPS likes to take use through NYC, but I ignore it.

And how does that help someone going from the Jersey Shore to Florida??

I second that motion. Don't know where on the shore you are but Google maps puts a trip from Toms River, NJ to Fort Wilderness at 17.5 hours and 1050 miles going the above mentioned way versus taking 95 all the way. That way is quicker at only 16 hours and 1062 miles.

You will pay tolls either way but for me, I would rather avoid the large cities. I used to live in Bass River and have taken the Lewes ferry (which I enjoy) and Chesapeake Bay Bridge many times.

Another way I've gone is to take 95 to Delaware 13 to Maryland 301 (really nice) then on US 50 over the Chesapeake. You can get on I-495 east of DC and follow that around to 95 again. That way would be 16 h 5m and 1073 miles. There still can be a lot of traffic on that beltway.

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry, then the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel is certainly an option. I didn't suggest it because of the tolls, but it would be a lot more pleasant trip than I95!

As a general principal, and particularly in the summer and warm weather, avoid cities as much as possible. Go around or away from them.

I 95 to Rt 896 in Delaware,

follow Rt 896/301 to Annapolis,

stay on 301 to Carmel Church in Virginia and miss DC, Baltimore and Richmond.
