I am only using Maps.Google.com to review parts of the roadway ahead of you. As for myself, I have NEVER driven it myself. Now the roadway ahead of you overall looks good from all that I can see and even though it’s a two-lane road there are passing lanes and the road looks good all down 16 from 20.
There is one Bridge crossing the Colorado River a steel Bridge and the height showing 15' 8" Overall looks like a nice well-driven road to drive down 16 from 20 to 10. But do make some stops in the towns and ask the local folks. As I am only using MAPS Google here to check the roads. But it looks good to me from all that I see. Now I have no idea when Google did a check and with all the rain how the road will be today. I’m thinking and searching river crossing and the roadway looks Okay. But it’s your decision to drive or not drive. You may want to Ask some Fire Departments along the way as they would have the best information if a road or bridge is out or not.

Sure hope this is some help to you?

I have driven that many times. It's a nice drive, especially when the Bluebonnets are blooming.
I would rather drive 16 than I-35.

Thanks for the replies. We did 35 and 290 last year and wasn't impressed so was hoping 16 was good road.

It's been many years since I travelled that portion of Hwy 16, so I can't comment on it. However, 281 is a nice drive to Johnson City, then west to Kerrville. The Hill country is beautiful no matter what time of the year you travel it.

We were in Fredericksburg all last week, while there drove 16 between Kerrville and Llano though in a rental car not in the coach, overall it seems to be a fair 2 lane highway. Though 87 going north out of Fredericksburg is a bit wider and nicer (a little smoother) on average. (we did the driving loop from Fredericksburg to Enchanted rock, on to Llano for lunch at Coopers BBQ, then over to Mason, and back down to Fredericksburg one of the days we were there). Also down to Kerrville on 16, and across to Mountain Home another day.

p.s. 16 north of Fredericksburg follows along the hillier part of the hill country

Hwy 16 between Kerrville and Bandera is not a good route for trailers and motorhomes. Lots of hairpin curves and a major drop-off with narrow roads. You will see signs advising large vehicles to take Hwy 173 to Bandera instead.

Here's a long (boring) video on Hwy 16 between Bandera & Kerrville. Yes, it has curves but it's a good two-lane road. Drop-offs? I guess I think of mountain driving with real drop-offs.

We love these kinds of drives and wouldn't hesitate doing it in our 40' motorhome.
