Coming from the west thru Las Cruces on our way to Carlsbad, NM. Wondering if it's better to go Hwy 70 to Alamogorde Hwy 82 to Artesia Hwy 285 to Carlsbad; 'or' I-10 to El Paso Hwy 62/180 to Carlsbad?
Noticed some elevation & tunnel on the northern route, but both ways are about the same mileage.
Will be traveling in March/April 2006. Any advice appreciated. thanks, Steve

Made the trip from Alamagorda to Carlsbad two weeks ago in a 40' coach. Very nice trip. Gets high in the ski area, but no steep climbs or decents. There was no cold or snow then. Might be less fun right now. No trouble of any kind on tunnels or curves. Came back West via Guadalupe and El Paso. Former was better, but glad I did it all.
Check the weather and go for it!
Be sure and see White Sands, etc. on the way

We were there about 3 weeks ago. Left the RV in Las Cruces, and drove the truck to Carlsbad via 285. Good road, no construction then, light traffic and easy driving, about 90 miles one way. Light visitor load at the NP. The park road is steep in places, curvy, and has a 30mph speed limit most of the way. There is a small motel/RV park at Whites city - the entrance to the park.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated! Will check weather before we head for Alamogordo in late March as there may still be snow(?) always have the other route as a backup.
The north route works better as we plan on staying at the KOA which is 15 miles north of the town of Carlsbad.
