Lincoln Hwy (US 30)

We love back roads. A perfect trip for us is no Interstates. Last year we went from Springfield IL to near Denver on US 36 and loved it.

Want to do this again. Watched a PBS program on the Lincoln Highway (US 30). At first it seemed that this route from WV to Cheyenne would be similar to last year's on 36 but the program was confusing implying that it really is just a access highway for I80.

Thoughts please? Many thanks.

Some of our favorite sites for 2 lane trip planning. We have done end to end: US20...US1...US41...US83 and lots with still segments to complete.

When you do this and go thru Mansfield, Ohio try to get there when the OSR (Ohio State Reformatory) is open for tours. You will need to search and see what days and times tours are allowed. This is where "The Shawshank Redemption" was filmed along with portions of: Air Force 1, Tango and Cash, Harry & Walter go to New York and several other events were filmed there.
Also nearby is Malabar Farm where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall got married.
Before Mansfield is a place Berlin Ohio the hub of the Amish in Ohio. You can get nice furniture and some great food in the area. One campground near Berlin is Evergreen RV Resort, it is a 5 star in Ohio. There are nice bulk food stores in the area one we go to is "The Ashery",and we go to "Walnut Creek General Store" they have a nice selection of fresh meats. In the Berlin area you can find leather makers, furniture makers, canvas items like this.

Lincoln Hwy (US 30)

Back roads is how we roll also. As Charles Kuralt famously said “Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything”

In addition to the excellent links that Twomed offered I also use

https://www.atlasobscura.com/

http://www.museumsusa.org/museums/

https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/

My favorite route planning tool is a 1956 road atlas I picked up on Ebay. I use that to find the routes of old federal highways that haven’t been paved over, but relegated to obscurity by interstates. Often time they have been renumbered as state or county roads.

This year we are planning to roughly follow US 64 from NC to Taos NM. Later from Colorado we will generally follow US36, US60 and US421 back to NC

I am old enough to remember riding/driving some of those roads.
Grew up as a Navy Brat so coast to coast moves were common.

In 58 my Dad retired in Terre Haute IN, and we moved to San Diego. I was lucky enough to help ferry the 2 Buicks on that trip. We were across US66 and US80 more than once.

We did the short drive from Stoytown, PA to Schellsburg on The Linclon Hwy. We were quite happy to hope on the interstate for the drive to Lancaster.
