Looking for information on the best route from Wichita Falls, TX
to Abilene, TX? I prefer 4 lane roads.

Don't be afraid of the two lane roads in Texas, most have very wide reinforced shoulders which most Texans who are driving slower than you will pull over out of the way to allow faster traffic to safely pass.

Be warned:
It is against the law to drive on the shoulders. We were on one of the 2 lane roads in Texas in October and we saw the police pull over a car that was driving on the shoulder.

Illegal or not, I know from having lived in Texas and driven thousands and thousands of miles there as part of my job, pulling onto the wide shoulder on the right side of a two lane road in the rural areas of South Texas and West Texas and allowing a faster vehicle to pass is a common practice. Both vehicles maintain their speed and in my experience there, have never seen anyone confronted by the police for that practice. Once passed, return to the normal lane of traffic and usually the driver who passed you will acknowledge your move to let him "keep on trucking" without having had to slow down.

there must have been another reason why the police pulled that driver over. I have always driven on the shoulder when someone wants to pass. And I have been in Texas since 67

Most of 281 is 4 lane. Some is 3 lane with the center lane changing from northbound to south bound every 2 miles to allow passing in either direction. Almost all of the small towns have bypasses around them except Anson. It is worth the drive through Anson to see the court house in the middle of town, especially if they have the Christmas decorations up. If you are into antiques there is a really good shop on the east side of the road 3 blocks north of the courthouse

I have always pulled over onto the shoulder to let traffic by too. I don't know if the police had another reason for pulling the driver over or not. All I know is what I saw and what the signs say.
When I first saw the other driver he was driving on the shoulder and the police were following him in the normal lane of traffic. I watched in my rear view mirror after they went by and saw the police turn on his lights and pull the driver over. Maybe the police were having a slow day.

Actually, its 277 that runs from Abilene to Wichita Falls. 180 goes through 5 blocks south of the courthouse.
