Louisville, KY to Knoxville, TN to Charlotte, NC.

We're heading out of the mid west and down to the southeast. After all the weather in TN and NC I have to decide on a route from Louisville, KY to Charlotte, NC.

How is I-75 looking from Louisville to Knoxville?

How is I-40, from Knoxville down to Ashville?

How is I-40 from Knoxville to Johnson City, TN.

How is I-26 from Johnson City to Ashville and on toward Spartenburg, NC?

If you think there is a better way I'm open to any suggestion.

We're currently in Iowa and heading toward Louisville.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just returned from Lafayette, In to AshEville, NC via I-64 to Lexington, then I-75 to K-town, then I-40. No problems other than normal rough roads in places.
Take it easy through the mountains east of K-town on I-40, some sharp, 45mph, curves and 2 tunnels. Then I-26 to Spartanburg, SC.. Heavy road construction on I-26 from Asheville for about 20 miles. TRY to plan that part of the trip before 4pm. Then I-85 to Charlotte ( super heavy, speeding traffic ). Good luck and safe travels.

You could take i40 to 321 then i85, or i40 to i77. This would avoid the worst of i26 and i85.

Probably still have major construction on I-75 around London, Ky. area. But if I remember it is only for about 20-30 miles.

I would go I-64 to Lexington, I-75 to Knoxville, I-40 to north of Charlotte then either I-77 or US-321/I-85 depending on where you want to be in Charlotte. The only mountain is Jellico and it's an easy climb. I don't know about current construction but the states 511 systems can tell you.

We decided to stop in Bluff City, TN after Lexington, KY (Georgetown actually).

So I will take I-26 from Johnson City to Asheville then I40 to either 321 or I-77.

Thanks for the help!

Yes I definitely would take I-40 from Asheville rather than I-26 and I-85. Another option you might consider is Hwy 16 from Hickory area to Charlotte, it is 4 lanes now and light traffic compare to 321 or I-77. We generally refer to I-77 as the road from hell and there can be a major wreck on it 24 hours a day.

Plans changed and we skipped East TN so we came down I75 to K’ville and I40 through Asheville to US321to Charlotte. All went very well. We have never driven the stretch of I40 from the I81 split to Asheville , it was an interesting drive.

As of last week, I-26 is in good condition north of Asheville, and passable but lots of construction south of Asheville. You just have to slow down a bit. Shortest route to Charlotte from Asheville is I-26 to US74 connecting to I-85 near Kings Mountain.
