Mackinac Isl., MI

We are thinking (keyword "thinking") about taking a trip to Michigan and visit Mackinac Isl. However, we don't know anything about the area, such as where the RV camps are, on the mainland. I know we can't take the RV or the toad, to the island but is it feasible to park in a campground nearby and make a day trip (with 2 dogs)? Is the effort worth it? Any information from you who have done this would be very helpful.

Thanks, Roland

Yes! Great place, good RV park(s). Visit Sault Ste. Marie as well and if you can make the Eastern side Lake Michigan part or your return trip you will find may great places to visit and stay and you can swim in a lake that make you feel you are at an ocean beach except that you come out clean and salt free!

There are several campgrounds close by to the ferrys to Mackinac. On the lower peninsula side there is 2 within minutes of Mackinac City and on the upper peninsula side there is Straits area State Park and also a campground near the Casino. My sticks and bricks is 30 miles from there and I worked on the Island years ago. If you want more info, PM me, I'll be glad to help.

My thanks to both of you. That's good information. We plan to take a trip, starting sometime in early May, heading for Lake Louise, Canada and thought about stopping by Mackinac. I am starting to make my trip plans and I will certainly keep your information in mind. Roland

Lakeshore RV Park Campground in St. Ignace is close by. We stayed there last year. Kinda bare-bones, but a nice view of the Lake and easy to get to the ferries. We're actually on planning a night there in May when we leave Spartan and loop around the UP heading west.

Hi gripper,
Like the previous posts, this is a great area to visit. We were there a couple of years ago. Stayed at Mackinaw Mill Creek CG (231-238-0035). The CG is convenient to the Mackinaw Island Ferries. There is more to the area than the island. For us, it takes two days to wee the island. We get up late and return early. After you do the island area, travel a bit farther north to Sault Ste. Marie (USA side). The last exit just before the bridge to Canada take a right (East) off of I75. There are a couple of CGs in the area. Also, there are several nice attractions:

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum
Soo Locks Boat Tours
Museum Ship Valley Camp
Tower of History

to name a few.

Dress warm. San Francisco and the Mackinac area are the two coldest July 4ths I've ever seen.
